Hector’s World
Set of six animated films and supporting materials
Hector is a young dolphin who with his underwater friends is learning all about the internet. Over the course of six cartoons he explores ways to keep his information private and how to get help when he is worried. Cartoons 1-3 covered in year 1
- Cartoon One: Details, Details…
- Cartoon Two: Welcome to the Carnival
- Cartoon Three: It’s a serious game

- To encourage children to be open about their online experiences with a trusted adult
- Cartoon Six: You’re not alone
Key issues covered
- The importance of keeping personal information private
- Understanding that sometimes things online may not be nice
- Why we need to be sensible and kind online
- Asking an adult for help
Target audience
The simple films make this resource suitable for very young children up to the age of seven years.
Learning objectives
The storylines help children understand why and how they should protect their identities online. Hector also introduces the idea that things online may not be as they seem and that sometimes other people may wish to be unkind or unpleasant. A key message is that children should ask a trusted adult for help if they are worried or upset by something they have seen online.
Supporting activities
Hector comes with a range of supporting materials including a song, games, puzzles and activities.
Suggestions for use with children with special educational needs or disabilities
The straightforward storylines make Hector’s world accessible to learners with mild to severe learning disabilities, although its cartoon approach may make it feel too juvenile for use with older age groups. The use of sea creatures may help learners with autism or other processing difficulties to access the messages without being confused by emotional content and facial expression, although some children may need help in translating the fantasy underwater content into the human context.
